The English Premier League (EPL) is set to enhance the way VAR (Video Assistant Referee) operates this season by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline offside calls. This change comes amidst ongoing debates about the efficiency and effectiveness of VAR since its introduction in 2019.
The Need for Improvement
While VAR has increased the accuracy of refereeing decisions—from 82% to 96%—one of the major complaints remains the time it takes to review plays. With an average of around 1,300 match events reviewed each season, many fans and players have criticized the delays, especially during crucial moments of the game.
Introducing Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT)
To address these concerns, the EPL plans to implement Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) starting in October 2024. This system has already been used in the 2022 Qatar World Cup and the 2024 Euros and promises to significantly reduce the time taken to make offside decisions by up to 31 seconds.
How Does SAOT Work?
SAOT utilizes AI for high-speed player tracking, providing clearer visuals for viewers. Instead of manually drawing offside lines, the technology creates a virtual curtain that accurately indicates which part of a player's body is offside. Here’s how it works:
High-Speed Tracking: The system can track up to 10,000 surface points on each player and the ball at a rate of 200 updates per second. This is made possible through modern AI and deep-learning algorithms that mimic human decision-making.
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs): A type of deep learning algorithm, CNNs process and analyze images to identify key features. They work through multiple stages to extract basic characteristics of the image and compile them into meaningful spatial representations.
Training the AI: The AI system is trained with numerous examples to improve its accuracy in detecting offside situations. Once trained, it can deliver real-time predictions during matches.
Looking Ahead
EPL officials, including Chief Football Officer Tony Scholes, acknowledge that VAR may never be perfect. However, they believe that introducing SAOT could significantly improve the system and enhance fan acceptance. Many fans are open to VAR if it becomes more efficient and enjoyable, especially considering the emotional impact of goals and celebrations.
Final Thoughts
As the EPL embraces SAOT, it stands at the forefront of technological advancements in sports. While challenges remain, the integration of AI into officiating processes holds the potential to reshape how fans experience football. With hopes for a more fluid and engaging match atmosphere, the future of VAR looks promising.
